At once a grand sweep through history and a domestic novel of petty differences, this tale of corruption and betrayal is packed with drama We learn about the murder of the Chopra clan’s shifty, crude, charismatic patriarch Laxman in the opening pages of The Complex. Twenty-five years have passed, but the stain on this once-respectable Punjabi family remains. The man who did it, Laxman’s nephew Brij, has served his jail time and is about to be released. Some relatives think Brij is too dangerous, too shameful to return to the family home, but his son Mohit decides the pair will live together – and rewinds the clock to tell the story of the decades leading up to the crime. Karan Mahajan’s warmly received first two works, Family Planning and The Association of Small Bombs , explored individual lives alongside larger forces – urban development in the former, a car bomb’s traumatic aftermath in the latter. His excellent third novel has Delhi at its heart, but also visits Indian villages and cities, the American midwest and London, its short chapters flitting between different members of the Chopra family. You start by nodding in appreciation at Mahajan’s observant character portraits; before you know it you’re waist-deep in frustration, corruption and betrayal, as the book ranges through politics, faith, migration, infidelity and entrepreneurship. India opener Abhishek Sharma smashed the fastest Twenty20 International century by a batter from a full-member nation on Thursday, blasting a 30-ball hundred as the hosts thrashed Afghanistan by 127 runs in Delhi to complete a 3-0 series sweep. The 26-year-old hammered 108 off 34 balls, striking nine fours and 11 sixes before falling to Rashid Khan. His hundred eclipsed the previous India record of a 35-ball century set by stalwart Rohit Sharma against Sri Lanka in 2017. Fellow opener and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson chipped in with 50 off 35 deliveries as India posted 221-7 after Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bowl. Afghanistan's reply never took off as the visitors slumped to 47-4 and were eventually bowled out for 94 in 14.1 overs. Captain Ibrahim Zadran was the only Afghanistan batter to cross 20, making 25, while India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and spinner Ravi Bishnoi dismantled the batting lineup with three wickets apiece. "I feel it's all dependent on my process before every series," Abhishek said. "It's very particular for me, against who I play and their bowlers, how I'm going to utilise the powerplay... The way I play, it's very important for the captain and the coach to be on your side. "You have to get surety. I feel this is because of them as well... It's very simple from day one. I just want to express myself. Just see the ball and hit the ball. From Delhi to New York, from the street to the bath house, he has captured clandestine moments, risked his freedom – and even referenced Romantic painters. Ahead of a major show, the photographer relives his landmark shots ‘I’ve been very promiscuous,” Sunil Gupta says, reflecting on his experiments with photography since the 1970s. Gupta, who was born in India, brought up in Canada and moved to the UK in 1978 after two years studying in New York, has documented and described queer lives for five decades. In his work, he’s quietly tried to find new ways of seeing, exploring the potential of photography to blur fiction and reality, public space and intimate, clandestine moments. His work explores the ways we love and relate to one another, set against the ever-shifting tides of politics and society. He photographs with love – but it hasn’t been without risk. An exhibition in India was once shut down by the government, and in his early days in the UK, when he was working with fellow photographer Tessa Boffin, he recalls curators “physically shrinking away when we walked in the room – two queers in leather were too much for them!
