According to the UN, more than 86,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since July, following fighting between the Iran-backed Houthis rebels and government forces. Many have fled to refugee camps in government-controlled Aden, while others have headed to neighbouring Djibouti.

Description Since 10 September 2026, the Obock region has been experiencing a significant influx of people arriving from Yemen, amid a deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the country. According to estimates shared by ONARS, approximately 1,600 Yemeni refugees , mainly women and children, have arrived in the Obock region to date. Some individuals are reported to have been rescued at sea by the Djiboutian authorities after their boats ran out of fuel. The main arrival points identified are Obock Port, as well as the coastal areas of Khor Angar, Moulhoul and Siâm , where groups of refugees have reportedly landed and are currently awaiting arrangements for their transfer to Obock town. Request For Assistance Government Requests International Assistance: - NS Requests International Assistance: - Information Bulletin Published No Actions taken by National Society General RFL Summary The Djibouti Red Crescent Obock Branch, through its Restoring Family Links (RFL) services, facilitated telephone calls for 28 refugee families who had recently arrived from Yemen. To help separated family members re-establish contact with their relatives, provide reassurance about their safety and whereabouts, and reduce the distress and uncertainty caused by the displacement. The calls were facilitated by CRD staff and volunteers as part of the immediate humanitarian response, particularly for families who had limited or no access to communication services. Actions taken by others The Government of Djibouti has mobilized relevant authorities to respond to the influx of refugees arriving from Yemen. ONARS is leading the registration of newly arrived refugees and their referral to appropriate services, while the Ministry of Social Affairs and Solidarity (MASS) is providing targeted food assistance, particularly for children. The Djiboutian Coast Guard has also conducted search and rescue operations at sea and provided assistance to people in distress, including those whose boats ran out of fuel. In parallel, IOM has provided food assistance in the form of ready-to-eat meals to newly arrived refugees.

Escalating fighting along Yemen’s western coast has driven more than 2,000 Yemenis across the Red Sea to Djibouti.

More than 70,000 people have fled their homes in Yemen after Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched an offensive to seize the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, with many escaping to Aden and around 1,400 crossing into neighbouring Djibouti. The UN and IOM warn the new displacement wave is worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis in a country devastated by 12 years of war.
