NCD and Gulf continue to be in drought for some time now whilst Western has just transitioned to drought critical this month. El Niño is firmly established and strengthening. Forecasts show El Niño is likely to persist into early 2027. Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is neutral. A positive IOD may possibly develop later in the coming months. The Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) is weak. It is likely to remain weak in the coming fortnight. NCD and Gulf remain in drought whilst Western has just transitioned to drought critical at a three months timescale. Little to no rainfall for prolonged periods in critical locations are already affecting livelihoods. Bougainville, Central, Hela, Manus, Milne Bay, Morobe and Southern Highlands continue to be in drought alert at a three months timescale. Chimbu, East New Britain, East Sepik, Eastern Highlands, Enga, Jiwaka, Madang, New Ireland, Oro, West New Britain, West Sepik, and Western Highlands are in drought watch for some time now. Significant drought impacts are possible. However, the magnitude will vary depending on the location
