In 2023, after a hiatus of a decade, his band Pulp started touring again, and last year played to 20,000 people at each of two nights at the O2 in London. This film features concert footage from those gigs in which a still lithe, still-got-it-at-60-odd Jarvis Cocker sings his hit art-pop anthems backed by most of the classic lineup and a 10-piece string section. And interspersed with the concert footage are autobiographical musings, nostalgic archive footage, interviews with Jarvis’s mum and gran, and Cocker narrating the story of how he got from there, almost half a century ago, to here. It’s something akin to a quiet earthquake: home nations jointly declaring their wish to be freed from English domination. A big move needs a big response Monday must have been a historical first. Never before have three of the four “nations” of the United Kingdom jointly demanded freedom to vote for its dissolution. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have lost confidence in England. They declared in Cardiff that the unionist government at Westminster is “coming to an end”. There was no such Celtic alliance against the Normans, Edward I or Cromwell. Celtic MPs have never formed a voting coalition in parliament. The Victorian Liberal party advanced “home rule for all”, but that was not independence and it got nowhere. Ireland rebelled, but it did so alone. When this eventually succeeded, Britain said good riddance, kept hold of Belfast and continued to centralise power in London. This temporary new home is now given over to some golden oldies with a jukebox musical combining the stories of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. It is almost 70 years since they wound up together one December afternoon at Sam Phillips’ Sun Studios in Memphis and recorded 40-odd songs. “Million dollar quartet” ran the caption that accompanied their picture in the newspaper. Did this impromptu supergroup share vocals on Blue Suede Shoes and did Cash and Perkins mash up My Babe and Sixteen Tons as they do here? All the evidence suggests not. They chiefly laid down gospel and spiritual numbers amid some breezy chatter kept on the recordings. Two of those, Down By the Riverside and Peace in the Valley, are kept from the original session – along with Chuck Berry’s Brown Eyed Handsome Man – in a show that uses the occasion to rotate instead through some of their greatest hits including Great Balls of Fire, which wouldn’t be recorded at Sun for another year. Even Libby Watson’s design, which turns the modest studios into a sort of checkerboard-floored rock’n’roll diner cum fairground, has a colourful arch resembling a retro jukebox. Continue reading...
