Lufthansa plans further European fleet cuts

The Lufthansa Group, one of the largest airline groups maintaining services to markets across the former Yugoslavia, is preparing a further reduction of its European fleet as it seeks to improve the profitability of its short- and medium-haul operations. Lufthansa plans to ground between fifteen and twenty additional aircraft from 2027, potentially resulting in fewer services operated under its mainline brand. The German flag carrier has acknowledged that numerous routes within its European network remain loss-making, prompting further restructuring measures designed to reduce costs and improve efficiency. The planned aircraft groundings will build on earlier capacity cuts, which have included the cancellation of hundreds of flights and continued adjustments to Lufthansa’s fleet and network. As a result, a greater proportion of flights could be operated by other Group carriers, including Lufthansa City Airlines, Eurowings and Discover Airlines. Lufthansa believes the redistribution of capacity will allow it to lower operating expenses while maintaining connectivity across its wider network. This winter, Air Dolomiti will operate flights between Munich and Zagreb for a limited period. From March 28, the carrier will also serve the Frankfurt - Ljubljana route alongside Lufthansa mainline. Meanwhile, plans to transfer the Munich - Belgrade service from Lufthansa mainline to Discover Airlines this winter have been put on hold. During the 2026/27 winter season, which runs from October 25 until March 27, Lufthansa mainline will operate 2.542 flights in both directions to markets across the former Yugoslavia. This represents a decrease of 26.3% on the previous winter, or 907 fewer operations. The carrier will offer 382.644 seats during the season, down 13.8%, or 61.160 seats. The bulk of the reductions stems from the winter suspension of the Munich - Ljubljana service and the discontinuation of the Frankfurt - Skopje route, which operated last winter. EX-YU Aviation News

Air Serbia adds over 100 weekly flights this winter

Air Serbia will operate an average of more than 100 additional weekly flights this winter compared with last year, driven by new route launches and increased frequencies across its network. For the first time during the winter season, the airline will maintain services from Belgrade to Seville, Tenerife, Baku, Alicante, Munich, Tromso and Nizhny Novgorod, as well as from Niš to Vienna and Malta. Belgrade - Dubrovnik flights are also being extended from seasonal summer operations to a year-round service. Combined, these routes will generate an additional 26 weekly departures in each direction. In addition to the new routes, Air Serbia is also increasing frequencies on a number of existing services. The largest increases will be on flights to Tivat, with an additional daily rotation bringing the total to 21 weekly, and Podgorica, with six extra flights for a total of 27 weekly. Frequency growth is also planned for Skopje, increasing from ten to fourteen weekly; Brussels, from three to five; Ljubljana, from fourteen to sixteen; Prague, from nine to eleven; Vienna, from sixteen to eighteen, and Tirana from between eight and ten last winter to twelve weekly. An additional weekly flight will also be added to several other destinations, with the new total number of weekly services shown in brackets: Istanbul (12), Athens (12), Bologna (4), Rome (8), Madrid (5), Bucharest (11), Split (3), Venice (4), Zagreb (10) and Larnaca (11). Air Serbia will reduce frequencies on a select number of routes for a limited period. Services to Gothenburg and Naples, which operated during November and December last year, but not for the remainder of the season, will not run this winter. Furthermore, flights to Barcelona and Thessaloniki will each be reduced from nine to seven weekly in November and December, while the daily rotation from January onwards match those from the previous winter. Overall, Air Serbia has scheduled 20.299 flights for the upcoming winter season, which runs from October 25 to March 27, representing an increase of 16.2% on last winter. Croatia Airlines to grow ATR wet-lease fleet

Croatia Airlines plans to expand its wet-leased turboprop fleet during the 2027 summer season by adding a second ATR aircraft, which is expected to be sourced from Croatian carrier ETF Airways. The additional capacity will result in a significant increase in ATR operations next year, with Croatia Airlines already scheduling exactly double the number of flights with the type compared to the 2026 summer season. The extent of the planned increase is visible in the existing 2027 summer timetable. In July of next year for example, Croatia Airlines has scheduled 544 ATR-operated flights, offering 38.080 seats, up 100% on July 2026. Zagreb accounts for the bulk of the flying next summer. The turboprop is currently most frequently scheduled on flights between Zagreb and Sarajevo, followed by services from the Croatian capital to Munich, Vienna and Zurich. The ATR will also be deployed from Zagreb to Dubrovnik, Mostar, Pula, Split and Zadar. Furthermore, the aircraft will operate a number of services outside Zagreb. Based on the current schedule, the ATR will be used between Munich and both Osijek and Rijeka, as well as on the Pula - Zadar route. A limited number of Dubrovnik - Rome flights are also currently scheduled with the type. The deployment is likely to undergo further changes before the start of the 2027 summer season. Croatia Airlines is expected to continue its cooperation with ETF Airways for the additional wet-leased aircraft. ETF, which has been developing its turboprop operations alongside its existing jet business, is itself expected to grow its ATR fleet. The arrangement gives Croatia Airlines access to lower-capacity aircraft suited to thinner regional markets at a time when its own fleet is being standardised around the Airbus A220. Lufthansa reverses Discover deployment to Belgrade
