Sweden general election: close race as far right eyes role in government – Europe live

Country heads to the polls as latest polling shows 0.3-point gap between left and right wing blocs in Stockholm We kick off our coverage of the 2026 Swedish parliamentary election which could see the far right enter government for the first time if the country’s rightwing parties can form a majority – or a new centre-left government take control instead. “In 2022, the current prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, the leader of the centre-right Moderates, broke a longstanding taboo to make a deal with the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD), so that his minority coalition could form a government. That agreement gave the SD outsized influence over government policy, especially on crime and immigration, and Kristersson has now gone further, promising ministerial posts for the SD if he is returned to power.” Continue reading...

A taste of home: discovering Sweden’s local food heroes

Chefs in the east of the country are shunning imported produce for local ingredients, reinforcing how food is intertwined with a region and its people ‘It’s a magical place, and not just because of the hotel.” Standing outside the greenhouses at Högbo Brukshotell , two hours north of Stockholm, Stefan Johansson is talking about far more than hospitality. The former head chef, now responsible for sustainability at Högbo, has spent much of the past decade helping reshape the way this corner of Sweden grows, cooks and thinks about food. The catalyst was disarmingly simple. Years ago, a journalist asked Johansson why he was cooking the food he was cooking. Like many ambitious Swedish chefs, Stefan trained in Stockholm’s top restaurants, where ingredients from around the world were only a phone call away. The question lingered long after the interview ended. Continue reading...

‘Absurd, hardline calls’: questions over Sweden’s post-Brexit migration policy

But the migration agency rejected his application, and he and his wife have been fighting with the Swedish authorities ever since. Continue reading...
