After a week of alarming warnings about artificial intelligence’s potential to destroy the world as we know it, our technology reporters Aisha Down , Blake Montgomery and Dan Milmo answer your questions on the reality of the AI threat In realistic terms how would artificial intelligence actually kill me? What is the main proxy threat? Nuclear war, death due to breakdown of society, a virus? I hear all these reports it could kill us but still unsure how that could practically happen? To be honest all sounds too wooly to really take seriously. Pottys99 Aisha: For what it’s worth, it seems unlikely that AI at this point can significantly change the equation around bioweapons or viruses … What has prevented bioweapon attacks through the past decades is not the difficulty of inventing new deadly viruses, but other, more prosaic issues. Consider the failure of Aum Shinrikyo to kill vast numbers of people with botulism and anthrax by spraying these around central Tokyo. There are a lot of logistical challenges, and chemical weapons seem more straightforward. Those exist without AI needing to invent new ones. Continue reading...

USD/JPY OANDA:USDJPY snapped a three-day winning streak and pared some of Wednesday's gains, consolidating around the psychological 156.00 level throughout the Asian trading session on Thursday, September 17, 2026. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ✅ BoJ vs. Fed Monetary Policy: BoJ Rate Hike to 1.25% Tomorrow (31-Year High) vs. Fed's Hawkish Dot Plot The foreign exchange market stands on the brink of a historic monetary policy decision from Tokyo: - ⚡Certainty of BoJ Rate Hike Tomorrow (+25 bps to 1.25%): The Bank of Japan is widely expected to raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 1.25% at tomorrow's policy meeting. Markets have also priced in the probability of a further hike in December due to persistent domestic energy inflation pressures. - ⚡USD Strengthening Post-Fed Decision: The Fed's FOMC unanimously raised the benchmark rate by 25 bps on Wednesday night and signaled one additional hike this year via the Dot Plot chart. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh highlighted persistent inflation, propelling the US Dollar (DXY) to its highest level since late July. - ⚡US Bond Sector: The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note is hovering near the 5.0% threshold (a high not seen since April 2007), preventing a sharp slide in USD/JPY ahead of the BoJ announcement. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ✅ Price Action Analysis (H4 Timeframe) The H4 structure reveals a significant recovery in bullish momentum following the massive vertical drop from the Higher High (HH) peak around 160.294. The decline was precisely halted at the floor of the Major Demand Zone (the lowest gray box: 152.875 – 153.500), forming a bottoming pattern followed by a series of bullish candles with substantial bodies. At the 156.024 price level, the most recent H4 candle shows consolidation near the latest local peak (156.279). A micro "Break of Structure" (BOS) is visible above the 155.248 green line; the area that previously acted as "Support Become Resistance" (SBR) has now transformed into a strong Support level. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ✅ Key Zones: - ⚡Resistance / Supply Zone: The 156.300 – 156.600 range (middle gray box / nearest Supply Zone) and the 158.059 green line level (upper limit of the Major Supply Zone). - ⚡Support / Demand Zone: The 155.248 green line level (lower-middle gray box / local SBR & Demand area) and the 152.875 green line level (lowest gray box / Major Demand Zone). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ✅ Elliott Wave Analysis Mapping wave cycle movements on the H4 timeframe: ⚡Wave Structure: The impulsive rally from the 152.875 floor to 156.279 is calculated as the impulsive expansion of Wave 1 (or a macro Wave A). ⚡Current Status: The mild consolidation near 156.024 is currently identified as the initial formation of a minor Wave 2 (Corrective Wave) or a sub-wave consolidation prior to the launch of the main expansion. ⚡Projection: Price action is projected to complete this minor consolidation above the 155.248 green line before launching an impulsive Wave 3 push—breaking through the 156.500 resistance and traversing the LVN zone—to target the 158.059 green line.

Takashi Miike took to the stage at the world premiere of his new film Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo like a rock star. “I’m Miike” he roared. “I’m back!” Which is immediately funny, because he’s never, ever really been away; arguably the hardest-working man in show business, Miike is never very far from a movie camera. Produced […]

The second re-imagining of “Bad Lieutenant” — Abel Ferrara’s 1992 neo-noir starring Harvey Keitel — Takashi Miike’s baffling “Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo” borrows the broad strokes of the original, but tells its own Yakuza-centric story that never fully gets going. Its stop-start approach sees numerous characters and subplots introduced before existing ones can be resolved, or […]

Hayao Miyazaki-scripted 90s teen romance sees an aspiring writer drawn to a potential soulmate thanks to library books and a curmudgeonly cat While 2013’s The Wind Rises and 2023’s The Boy and the Heron saw Hayao Miyazaki break his wizard’s staff, artistically speaking, this lesser-known Studio Ghibli cut from 1995, based on his screenplay, shows he was dwelling on creative responsibilities from early on. Featuring a typical Ghibli protagonist on the brink of adulthood – aspiring schoolkid writer Shizuku (voiced by Yōko Honna) – this teen romance doubles up as an earnest pep talk on how to commit to the artistic life. It’s not quite as sophisticated, though, in its understanding of the interplay between imagination and reality as Miyazaki’s later masterpieces. It also features highly inventive use of that 2010s soundtrack favourite: John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads . Shizuku shows off her fledgling penmanship for a school performance of the song devising hilarious Japanese lyrics that satirise Tokyo’s “concrete roads”. But while her writing shows promise, her love life remains in the fantasy realm. Mainlining library books, she realises that the same name, Seiji Amasawa, keeps appearing on the lists of previous borrowers. It feels like fate is pointing her towards a soulmate – especially when a curmudgeonly cat leads her “like in a story” to an intriguing curio shop near the library. Continue reading...

Waymo's Tokyo venture could accelerate global adoption of autonomous vehicles, addressing labor shortages and enhancing urban mobility solutions.

Toronto film festival: There’s a surprisingly tame quality to the gorehound’s contribution to the rough and ready franchise and a general aimlessness that frustrates Abel Ferrera’s Bad Lieutenant, starring Harvey Keitel as the eponymous coke-addled cop stumbling into crime scenes and contributing to the injustices, felt like it had us rooting around the mouldy and corroded interior of a back-alley dumpster, searching for a soul. A Takashi Miike adaptation seemed an appealingly foul idea. The maestro behind Audition and Ichi The Killer is known for punishing audiences with J-horror violence but with a formal elegance that we couldn’t look away from. His Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo should have been the perfect marriage of moral degradation and corporal desecrations. The movie lives up to its promise when those extremes are giddily on the same page. But more often than not Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo is a confounding and frustrating mess, a smorgasbord of good ideas (and some bad ones) at odds with each other, barely held together by Shun Oguri’s wily performance.
