Ministry of Interior arrests international gang leader wanted by Sweden for money laundering crimes

Abu Dhabi: In a joint security operation reflecting the level of international cooperation in combating transnational organised crime, the UAE Ministry of Interior, in cooperation and coordination with the Swedish authorities, announced the arrest of a Swedish national who is the leader of an international gang. The suspect had fled Sweden and was wanted under a Red Notice issued by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) on suspicion of involvement in money laundering crimes. The arrest coincided with the Swedish authorities’ arrest of six members of the gang in Sweden. The Ministry stated that investigations revealed that the network had handled approximately SEK70 million, equivalent to AED26.5 million, over a ten-month period by dealing in cash proceeds derived from criminal activities and redirecting them to other criminal entities, in addition to using cryptocurrencies to transfer and move the value of those funds. The tracing of cryptocurrency transactions and analysis of digital evidence also helped uncover financial links to other criminal activities, including organised crime and contract killings. The operation was the result of direct security coordination and intelligence sharing between the UAE and Swedish authorities. Extensive searches, investigations, and close monitoring led to the identification of the gang leader’s whereabouts and his arrest in the United Arab Emirates, simultaneously with the arrest of six members of the network in Sweden. Legal proceedings were initiated against them. Brigadier Abdulaziz Al Ahmad, Director General of the Federal Criminal Police at the Ministry of Interior, said that the operation underscores the effectiveness of security cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Sweden, as well as the importance of exchanging information and expertise in pursuing international criminal networks and tracking their activities and financial flows. He added, "The United Arab Emirates reaffirms its firm commitment to pursuing individuals wanted by justice and combating transnational organized crime. In cooperation with its international partners, the UAE will continue to track criminal networks, disrupt their sources of financing, and take legal action against anyone seeking to exploit the country’s territory for criminal activities.” For his part, Anders Wiberg, Police Commissioner and Head of the International Division of the Swedish Police Authority, praised the security cooperation with the UAE, saying, "The close and effective cooperation with the United Arab Emirates was a key factor in achieving the successful outcome of this case, and we express our sincere gratitude to the UAE authorities for their valuable cooperation and support.”

AI preparedness essential as technology reshapes media, society: Abdulla Al Hamed

Dubai: Governments, organisations and individuals must prepare for the rapid development of artificial intelligence as the technology increasingly shapes information, media and everyday life, Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, Chairman of the National Media Authority, said during the Arab Media Summit 2026. Speaking during a session titled "The Next Chapter for Arab Media”, Al Hamed said societies needed to build greater awareness of AI, particularly as increasingly sophisticated content makes it harder to distinguish between genuine and fabricated information. He said preparedness should extend beyond governments and companies to communities, schools and children. "The world is changing, and it is our responsibility to keep pace with that change,” Al Hamed said. He warned that AI could also pose risks to national security if governments and societies were not sufficiently prepared to understand and respond to the technology and the misinformation it can enable. Referring to misinformation circulated during recent regional developments, Al Hamed said fabricated videos and reports had attempted to create fear by falsely suggesting that incidents had taken place in the UAE. According to Al Hamed, public trust and awareness played an important role in countering such content, with citizens and residents using social media to challenge false reports and publish footage showing what was actually happening on the ground. He said individuals also have a responsibility to verify information before believing or sharing it, particularly as AI tools become more capable of producing convincing images, videos and written content. Al Hamed added that he uses AI tools himself to trace the origins of images and information and assess the credibility of their sources. Al Hamed said avoiding artificial intelligence was no longer a realistic option, comparing its development to earlier concerns surrounding technologies such as calculators, which eventually became an ordinary part of daily life. "The question is: will it be dangerous while I am prepared for it, or dangerous while I know nothing about it?” he said. He added that people should develop enough knowledge of AI to understand both its potential and its risks, rather than rejecting the technology because of concerns about how it may evolve. Al Hamed said he currently uses more than 120 AI agents to assist with tasks ranging from emails and calendars to reminders, upcoming events and personal organisation. "Life is going to change. The way we deal with one another is going to change,” Al Hamed said. Addressing concerns that artificial intelligence could replace jobs, he said sectors including film production, journalism, media and law would all be affected, with AI increasingly taking over certain tasks and giving professionals more time to focus on other areas of their work. However, he stressed that human input would remain essential. "No matter how much artificial intelligence develops, the human touch will remain,” Al Hamed said. He encouraged organisations and employees to embrace AI responsibly as a tool to improve performance, generate ideas and work more efficiently. "AI helps us with our work. It saves time, helps us improve our performance and can open up ideas that we may not have considered ourselves,” he said.

ADEK advances AI Literacy initiative across more than 170 private schools

Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) is advancing the implementation of its comprehensive AI Literacy initiative across more than 170 private schools. The initiative provides a model of AI entitlement that progressively builds students’ capabilities from KG to Grade 12 while prioritising their wellbeing at every stage. In the early years, learning focuses on developing critical and logical thinking through age-appropriate, screen-free experiences before they gradually start engaging with AI tools as they grow older and advance to evaluating AI outputs, developing AI-powered solutions and understanding how intelligent systems should be governed responsibly. Throughout this learning journey, AI is used to support and extend students’ thinking, not replace it, with guardrails designed to prevent overreliance on AI and protect students’ cognitive agency. By Grade 12, students will progress to designing AI systems and scalable solutions, enabling them to progress from simply using AI to actively contributing to its development. At the core of the initiative is a purpose-built framework that follows a human-centered approach, positioning students as co-creators of AI systems and applications, guided by ethical judgment and responsible citizenship. The framework defines clear learning outcomes across four key strands: AI conceptual understanding; critical evaluation and informed interaction; AI solution design and development; and responsible governance, data privacy and societal impact. To ensure the framework remains rigorous and internationally benchmarked, its development has been informed by leading global and national institutions, including the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Microsoft and Khalifa University of Science and Technology. The framework is translated into practice through a dedicated AI curriculum that balances the know-how and know-why of AI. Extending across all grades, the learning progression is anchored in four AI learner profiles, from AI Aware Explorer and AI Literate Thinker, to AI Solution Builder by Grade 8 and Systems & Solutions Designer by Grade 12. The curriculum includes a complete suite of year-long lesson plans and teacher toolkits. Schools can integrate the curriculum within existing subjects, through a hybrid model or as a standalone offering, giving them flexibility in delivery while ensuring students achieve the required AI learning outcomes at every stage. To establish students’ starting points and measure how their capabilities develop, ADEK has introduced the AI Growth Test, a standardised school-level AI assessment conducted twice a year for students in Grades 4-12. The assessment provides a baseline of students’ AI knowledge and skills, helping schools identify individual and cohort-level learning needs and track progress over time. Where gaps are identified, targeted bridging lessons will help students build the foundations needed to progress through the curriculum. Underpinning the initiative is ADEK’s in-school Technology and AI Policy, which sets clear requirements for the adoption and use of AI and digital technologies across private schools. Schools are required to use AI learning tools that meet ADEK requirements and maintain the digital infrastructure and staff capabilities needed for responsible implementation. The policy establishes safeguards across six key areas: data protection and student privacy; cognitive agency; academic integrity; human oversight of AI-generated decisions; content safety and cultural alignment with UAE values; and algorithmic fairness. These safeguards aim to ensure AI enriches the learning experience and strengthens students’ capabilities, while preserving the essential role of independent thinking, problem-solving, judgment and decision-making. Recognising teachers as central to successful implementation, the initiative is anchored by a structured three-level professional development programme, with 19,000 educators targeted for training and upskilling by the completion of the programme. Mandatory Level 1 Foundational AI Literacy training equips educators with core AI concepts, responsible and ethical use, prompting skills and practical classroom applications, including how AI-powered tools can support teaching and targeted interventions across subjects. Level 2 provides optional training for heads of department across subject areas, focusing on integrating AI into teaching and learning. Level 3 provides advanced mastery training for a designated AI Lead in each school, building in-school expertise to support implementation and fellow educators. Teachers are supported with a comprehensive resource package covering the syllabus, learning outcomes, lesson plans, teaching materials, assessment guidance, implementation resources and structured bridging content, enabling consistent curriculum delivery across schools. Abu Dhabi’s AI Literacy initiative, through its continued implementation across Abu Dhabi’s private schools, marks a shift from introducing AI as a tool to embedding AI literacy as a core part of education. By combining ambitious learning outcomes with curriculum, assessment, policy and teacher development, the initiative aims to develop confident, values-driven learners who can harness AI critically, act ethically and contribute to the prosperity and wellbeing of Abu Dhabi and the world.

NYU Abu Dhabi researchers uncover promising new antibiotic against drug-resistant bacteria

Abu Dhabi: Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi have uncovered a promising new antibiotic that can kill bacteria responsible for serious infections, including drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, a type of bacteria that can cause pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and other illnesses. The discovery could help in the search for new antibiotics against drug-resistant infections. Called rhabdobranin, the antibiotic is naturally produced by Xenorhabdus, a type of bacteria that lives alongside parasitic worms that infect insects. Scientists had identified the genes that appeared to be responsible for producing the compound, but had been unable to isolate the antibiotic and test whether it could kill harmful bacteria. By producing rhabdobranin in the laboratory, the researchers were able to study it in detail and discovered that its structure had originally been identified incorrectly. They found that a small difference in the structure made a major difference in how effectively it killed bacteria, allowing them to identify its most active form. Laboratory tests showed that rhabdobranin could kill several types of harmful bacteria, including carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae. These bacteria are resistant to carbapenems, a group of powerful antibiotics often used to treat serious infections, making infections caused by them particularly difficult to treat. "This study highlights the potential of looking in unexpected places for new antibiotics,” said NYU Abu Dhabi Associate Professor of Chemistry and senior author Alan R. Healy. "Rhabdobranin is particularly promising because it is active against bacteria that are increasingly difficult to treat, including drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. While further research is needed, this provides an important starting point for exploring new approaches to antibiotic development.” The researchers also found that rhabdobranin works by stopping bacteria from making proteins, a process they need to grow and survive. The findings demonstrate how genetic information from bacteria can help scientists discover new natural antibiotics that might otherwise remain hidden, offering another approach to addressing antibiotic resistance.

Arab ministers call for faster government communication while safeguarding media independence

Dubai: Governments must communicate verified information more quickly and clearly without compromising the independence of professional media, Arab information ministers said at the Arab Media Summit 2026. The discussion highlighted how information gaps can quickly create information disorder, particularly during crises, making it essential for official institutions to provide timely facts while allowing media organisations to examine, explain and deliver them professionally. The discussion took place during “The Ministers Roundtable”, featuring His Excellency Dr. Ramzan Al Noaimi, Minister of Information, Kingdom of Bahrain; His Excellency Dr. Khaled Zarour, Minister of Information, Syrian Arab Republic; His Excellency Diaa Rashwan, Minister of State for Information, Arab Republic of Egypt; and His Excellency Dr. Mohammad Hussein Al-Momani, Minister of Government Communication, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The session was moderated by Naoufer Ramoul, Media Presenter at DMI. His Excellency Dr. Mohammad Hussein Al-Momani said official institutions must communicate quickly, accurately and continuously, especially when complete information is not immediately available. He said that, when an incident is unfolding, governments should acknowledge it and commit to providing verified updates, helping prevent unverified information from filling the gap. At the same time, he stressed that media organisations must be given sufficient space to work independently and professionally. The speakers’ remarks highlighted the need for stronger professional capabilities, greater regional coordination and more effective formats for communicating beyond domestic audiences. Picture credit: GDMO His Excellency Diaa Rashwan reinforced this distinction, arguing that the role of government is to facilitate professional media through appropriate constitutional and legal frameworks rather than act as its guardian. He said the weakening of professional journalism had allowed social media in parts of the Arab world to shift from being a tool for accessing news to becoming a primary source of news, creating greater space for rumours and inaccurate information. His Excellency Dr. Khaled Zarour said speed alone could not build trust without credibility. He highlighted the importance of protecting media freedom, developing specialised journalism and presenting information within its proper context. Media, he added, must help audiences recognise verified facts rather than simply reinforcing selective narratives or existing biases. Drawing on Bahrain’s crisis-communication experience, His Excellency Dr. Ramzan Al Noaimi said public trust depended on providing honest information and practical guidance, even when developments were difficult. He also said official media institutions should treat technological change as an opportunity, highlighting AI’s potential across news monitoring, editing, production and analysis of content consumption. The discussion also turned to the ability of Arab media to reach international audiences. The speakers’ remarks highlighted the need for stronger professional capabilities, greater regional coordination and more effective formats for communicating beyond domestic audiences. Taken together, their remarks pointed to a shared direction for strengthening trust: official institutions provide verified information promptly, professional media retain the freedom to examine and contextualise it and technology expands its reach without weakening accuracy.

British Airways to resume daily London-Dubai flights on November 3

British Airways is preparing to resume flights to Dubai from November 3, restoring part of the air connectivity between the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates after services were suspended amid regional unrest. The airline will operate one daily flight between London and Dubai during the winter season. The frequency will increase to two daily flights during the summer season as part of a gradual return to its regional services. British Airways had earlier postponed the resumption of Dubai flights from October 25 to November 3. British Airways' flights to Abu Dhabi will remain suspended until the 2027-2028 winter season, reflecting the airline's gradual approach to restarting its network in the region. British Airways suspended flights to the UAE on February 28, 2026, after war broke out between the United States and Iran. The airline subsequently postponed plans to resume services several times due to continued regional instability. The airline said it continues to monitor developments in the Middle East and update its flight schedule to provide greater clarity to customers. It stressed that the safety of passengers and crew remains the priority in decisions on flight operations. During the unrest, the airline said it helped thousands of passengers return home, operated relief flights and added capacity on a number of major long-haul routes. British Airways' return to Dubai is part of a series of schedule adjustments by international airlines in the region, as carriers continue to reassess operations in light of developments affecting regional airspace.

Dubai flu shot 2026: Where to get vaccinated, how to book and what it costs

Dubai: Have you taken your flu shot yet? If not, it’s time to roll up your sleeve. Just this week, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) launched its 2026-2027 awareness campaign on influenza and seasonal respiratory diseases under the theme "Protect Yourself... Protect Your Community.” Flu season is about to start, and you can take protective measures, thanks to convenient facilities offered by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). Here’s everything you need to know about the flu shot, how it helps, and where to get yours in Dubai. What is influenza (flu)? Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that affect the nose, throat and lungs. Every flu season is different, according to the US-based Centre for Disease Control (CDC), and the flu affects people differently. Complications from flu can be particularly serious for young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with chronic conditions. Why should I get a flu shot? Dr Rohit Jacob, Specialist Internal Medicine at Aster Clinic, Business Bay, said it’s generally recommended for everyone to take the seasonal flu vaccine, as it serves as a preventive step that reduces the chance of acquiring the flu. It also helps reduce the risk of complications, such as pneumonia, worsening asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination, according to the CDC – these antibodies provide protection against illnesses. Dr Rohit Jacob, Specialist Internal Medicine at Aster Clinic, Business Bay. Picture credit: Supplied Dr Jacob said: “The flu vaccine is updated each year to target the influenza strains expected to circulate that season. It may not prevent every infection, but it significantly lowers the likelihood of getting flu, and can make illness less severe if infection does occur. It also reduces transmission within households, workplaces and schools, thus helping protect those who are more vulnerable.” The flu shot needs to be taken every year because flu strains change, and “last year’s protection does not automatically mean a lifetime subscription,” added Dr Jacob. Who is eligible to receive a flu shot? In the UAE, the flu vaccine is recommended annually by MOHAP for everyone aged six months and above, provided they do not have a medical contraindication. The vaccine is especially important for the following categories of residents: Children aged six months to five years Adults aged 65 years and above Pregnant women People living with diabetes, asthma, chronic lung disease, heart disease, kidney disease or with weakened immunity Healthcare workers Anyone living with, or regularly caring for, high-risk family members If you are a parent of a child younger than six months, it’s worth noting that infants in this age group are too young for the vaccine. Dr Jacob advised parents, siblings and caregivers to ensure they are vaccinated, so that vulnerable infants in their households are, in turn, protected. When is the ideal time to get a flu shot? For most people, September and October are the best times to be vaccinated against influenza, according to the CDC. The same is true for UAE residents. Dr Jacob said: “The reason is that it takes around two weeks after the vaccination for the body to develop its protective immune response, so receiving it early provides protection before flu activity increases during the autumn and winter months. However, it is still worthwhile later in the season. If someone misses September or October, they should not wait until the following year. Vaccination can continue while influenza viruses are circulating.” How can I book a flu shot? You can make an appointment for a flu shot through the DHA’s website or app, and complete the appointment at a primary health care centre. Alternatively, you can opt for walk-in services at Smart Salem, which is a DHA-authorised centre. Book an appointment via DHA Follow these steps to make an appointment to get your flu shot at a DHA primary health care centre: Visit DHA’s website at dha.gov.ae or download the DHA app from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. India's Tata reappoints chairman, backs listing in rift with controlling charity

NEW DELHI: India's Tata reappointed N. Chandrasekaran as chairman on Thursday and decided to consider a public listing, defying the family charity which controls the salt-to-software conglomerate and laying bare a schism within the 158-year-old group. Chandrasekaran and the Noel Tata-led Tata Trusts, which owns 66% of Tata's holding company, have sparred over issues ranging from a potential listing of Tata Sons and Air India's mounting losses to a planned exit by a minority shareholder. The 63-year-old chairman's reappointment came as a relief for the group which faces deepening losses at Air India, a sharp slump at Jaguar Land Rover and the fallout from a data breach, lifting the shares of Tata Group companies. Boardroom disputes are not new to Tata Sons. In 2016, the board sacked its then-chairman after he fell out over ‌governance issues with group patriarch Ratan Tata, Noel's half-brother who headed the charity arm before his death in 2024. Chandrasekaran had last month said he would not seek another term as chairman after February 2027. But Tata Group said in a statement the ‌board this month requested him to reconsider his decision in "larger interests", which he accepted on ‌Thursday. Noel Tata, 68, opposed Chandrasekaran's reappointment as well as the potential listing of Tata Sons, in a ‌statement at Thursday's board meeting, highlighting the disagreements. The reappointment ‌is "illegal" according to the Articles of Association of Tata Sons, Tata Trusts said in a statement, adding that both of the two trusts' nominees on the board are required to vote in ‌favour, but Noel Tata had voted against. Tata Sons did not respond to a request for comment on those allegations. Chandrasekaran joined the group's IT services arm TCS in 1987 after a master's degree in computer applications, and rose through the ranks. The group has publicly referred to him as a "Tata lifer". He first became chairman of Tata Sons in 2017, and the reappointment will be his third term. "Retaining Chandrasekaran removes a potential leadership uncertainty and reassures investors," said Aishvarya Dadheech, founder and chief investment officer at India's Fident Asset Management. Potential listing Tata Sons, which is the apex holding company of the Tata Group, controls more than 30 Tata companies, including IT firm TCS and Tata Motors. Tata Group companies had combined revenue of $185 billion in the last financial year. Its 26 publicly listed companies had a combined market capitalisation of $277 billion as of March 31. Thursday's board decision also comes days after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rejected Tata Sons' request to be exempted from rules that would require it to list, something it has been trying to avoid having to do. The RBI classified it ‌as an "upper-layer" non-banking financial company (NBFC) in 2022. Companies in that category are subject to enhanced regulation and a listing requirement. The board on Thursday said it would move towards that compliance requirement and consider a listing, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told Reuters. Tata Sons stopped short of making that explicit, saying it will "initiate steps to comply with the applicable RBI Guidelines and will seek guidance from RBI, Tata Trusts and other stakeholders on applicable compliance requirements."
