Emirates weighs switching Boeing 787 order to 777X amid delivery delays

Dubai: Emirates Airline is considering converting its order for Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to Boeing 777X jets as it reassesses fleet requirements amid ongoing delays to the 787 programme. Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and Chief Operating Officer of Emirates, said the option of converting the order remains under consideration given the delays affecting the aircraft. Emirates currently has 35 Boeing 787s on order, comprising 20 Boeing 787-8s and 15 Boeing 787-10s. Speaking on the sidelines of Arabian Travel Market 2026, Al Redha said the airline is reviewing its plans in light of delivery schedules and cabin outfitting requirements, particularly as it expects to begin receiving Boeing 777X aircraft from the middle of next year. He noted that the Airbus A350, which is already entering service with Emirates, offers seating capacity and range capabilities similar to those of the Boeing 787. “The option of converting to the 777X remains on the table,” Al Redha said. “Everything is possible and we will discuss everything in this regard with the manufacturer.” He added that Emirates has two options: proceed with deliveries of the Boeing 787 according to a revised schedule agreed with Boeing or convert the order to Boeing 777X aircraft. According to Al Redha, discussions between Emirates and Boeing regarding the 787 order are expected to become clearer within the next two months, after which the airline will decide on its preferred course of action. If Emirates proceeds with the 787 order, he said deliveries are not expected to begin before the end of 2029. The review comes as Emirates continues expanding and modernising its wide-body fleet through the delivery of Airbus A350 aircraft and the anticipated arrival of Boeing 777X jets as part of its long-term growth strategy.

Air Serbia increases SAF use, warns of high costs

Air Serbia sees sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as an important element of the aviation industry’s decarbonisation efforts but says its price and limited availability remain major obstacles to wider adoption. Speaking at the OIE Serbia conference, the carrier’s General Manager for Commercial and Strategy, Bosko Rupić, said SAF currently accounts for around 1.7% of the airline’s fuel use, up from approximately 0.67% in 2024. Although Serbia is not a member of the European Union, a significant proportion of Air Serbia’s operations involve EU markets, where regulations are gradually increasing the required share of SAF. Under current targets, the proportion will rise from 2% to 6% by 2030 and eventually reach 70% by 2050. SAF supplies are currently not available at Belgrade Airport. Mr Rupić noted that SAF is between two and three times more expensive than conventional jet fuel. “Fuel accounts for between 20% and 30% of an airline’s total costs”, Mr Rupić said, adding that carriers generally operate with margins of only 3% to 4%. He argued that the financial burden of aviation’s decarbonisation cannot be placed solely on airlines or passed on entirely to passengers through higher ticket prices. According to Mr Rupić, greater involvement from governments and the wider public sector will be necessary to support the transition and offset some of the additional costs. Fleet modernisation is another important part of Air Serbia’s efforts to reduce emissions. Mr Rupić pointed to the usage of newer-generation aircraft, including the Airbus A220, through a wet-lease arrangement, which offer lower fuel consumption and consequently reduced carbon emissions. NEWS FLASH Air Serbia inaugurated flights between Belgrade and Tenerife this afternoon, marking its seventh destination in Spain. The sold-out inaugural service was operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft, although an A220-300, wet-leased from airBaltic, will operate the majority of flights this winter. Tenerife becomes Air Serbia’s sixth-longest route, behind its long-haul services, and its longest within Europe. Operations were initially scheduled to commence on October 27 but were brought forward to mid-September due to strong demand. Flights will run twice per week. Commenting on the launch, Air Serbia’s General Manager for Commercial and Strategy, Boško Rupić, said, “With the launch of nonstop flights to Tenerife, we continue to expand Air Serbia’s network in Spain, which is one of the most important and attractive tourist destinations in Europe. Strong passenger interest in this service has shown that there is clear demand for a direct link between Belgrade and the Canary Islands. Tenerife is a destination that, thanks to its pleasant year-round weather, offers opportunities to travel outside the traditional summer season, particularly during autumn and winter. We believe that the new service will be of interest to passengers from Serbia and the region, as well as to those travelling to Tenerife from other destinations in our network via Belgrade".
