Don’t celebrate graffiti artists who deface our public spaces | Letters

Christopher Nash and Rob Sykes respond to articles paying tribute to the late artist Helch, whose targets included bridges and other public structures It is hard to understand why Eddy Frankel feels it necessary to praise the legacy of the alleged “graffiti supremo” known as Helch ( HRH Helch: the graffiti artist who left an indelible mark on high-rise Britain, 1 September ). The tagging on the viaduct near Windsor Castle rightly annoyed the late Queen, as it does most of her subjects when it spreads into our urban landscape. Graffiti isn’t just about “upsetting the poshos”; it is an ugly and threatening defacing of our public spaces. Frankel says Helch leaves behind “a towering legacy, one that’ll cost developers a hell of a lot to scrub off, and that makes it worth every penny”; that shows a complete lack of social responsibility. I camped in one of Britain’s last remaining rainforests

A fragment of temperate rainforest lies on the edge of Dartmoor, and following years of conservation work, its owners have now opened up a sustainable campsite next to this fragile ecosystem Mist blankets the valley as I wheel my camping gear down the small hill towards a clearing ringed by trees and shrubs. A picnic bench sits at its edge, angled towards the reason why I’m here: one of the last remaining fragments of temperate rainforest in Britain. I’m pitching my tent at Wray Valley Camping, a low-impact site on Dartmoor’s eastern edge between Lustleigh and Moretonhampstead, where I’ll spend five days on one of the site’s “nearly wild” pitches. Also known as Atlantic woodland, temperate rainforests depend on a rare combination of high humidity, rainfall and consistently mild coastal temperatures where the sea moderates the climate. They once stretched from the western Highlands of Scotland down to Cornwall, covering 20% of the UK , and sheltering rare and delicate lichens and plants. Today more than 95% of our temperate rainforest cover is gone, but Devon’s near-constant dampness and its exposure to the Atlantic make it one of the last strongholds for this rare habitat. Costs are spiralling, with many local councils forced to dedicate the vast majority of their budgets to it. At the same time, more and more families are seeing their savings disappear into the black hole of nursing home fees. With an ageing population, the problem is set to get worse. In only his second week as prime minister, Andy Burnham pledged to succeed where so many of his predecessors have failed: by fixing Britain’s social care system. And yet, as parliament returns from recess, the new-ish administration is still worryingly unclear about how it will do this. Despite Burnham declaring that care workers should enjoy better compensation, we don’t know how he plans to pay for any of it – not least because he has kept Starmer’s campaign pledge to not raise income tax, VAT or national insurance.
