Israeli settler and Palestinian driver killed in West Bank shootings

A suspected Palestinian gunman on Sunday shot dead an Israeli man near a West Bank settlement, according to Israeli officials. The gunman was located at a Ramallah hospital and arrested, police said. Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian motorist who the military said was attempting to run them over. The flare up in violence came on the eve of the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur.

An Israeli settler has been fatally shot in the occupied West Bank, while Israel's military said it killed a man who attempted to ram his vehicle into troops elsewhere in the Palestinian territory. The news came as violence in the West Bank is escalating at a very rapid pace. “All Israeli military authorities involved with the West Bank have been warning the Israeli government that the situation is basically out of control”, explains FRANCE 24 correspondent Noga Tarnopolsky.

Highlights The Gaza Strip Humanitarian partners warned of major gaps ahead of the 2026-2027 winter preparation phase, driven by severe funding shortfalls and continued restrictions on the entry of critical supplies and equipment into the Gaza Strip. UNRWA continues to play a central role in the response, co-leading the Site Management Cluster and running the largest network of collective displacement sites – currently hosting approximately 65,000 internally displaced persons across 114 emergency shelters. As part of efforts to streamline and strengthen primary healthcare delivery, UNRWA integrated services previously provided through four medical points located within emergency shelters into nearby health centres. The Agency also continues piloting the Family Health Team model in three health centres across the Gaza Strip, whereby the same medical specialists are assigned to a family throughout its medical history, to improve service quality, efficiency, continuity, and patient-centred care. UNRWA’s Summer Activities Programme concluded on 3 September 2026. Over 47,700 children participated in recreational and psychosocial support activities, as well as in remedial classes in literacy, numeracy, and foundational English and science skills. The summer learning activities were delivered in-person across 686 classrooms in 83 UNRWA collective emergency shelters, with support from over 3,000 UNRWA education staff. The occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem Following the forced entry into Kalandia Training Centre on 25 August 2026, Israeli authorities have remained on site inside the compound. The centre was due to start classes this week for more than 340 Palestine Refugee students from across the occupied West Bank. Approximately 48,000 Palestine Refugee students started the new academic year at 90 UNRWA schools across the occupied West Bank on 7 September, amid challenges to their right to education, including movement and access restrictions, security operations in and around schools, and high levels of occupation-related violence. Three Palestinians were killed in incidents linked to Israeli settler violence, as the occupied West Bank continues to experience heightened levels of violence and harassment perpetrated by Israeli settlers. Settlement expansion – contrary to international law – also continued, with a new settlement established near Qabatiya on 31 August.

Country: occupied Palestinian territory Source: UN Women A new analysis from UN Women reveals the extent of daily suffering endured by women and girls across the occupied West Bank. For women who are heading households, our data show that the impacts of violence, demolition of homes, and movement restrictions are even more devastating. Settler violence, military operations, and movement restrictions in the occupied West Bank have reached a two-decade high, reinforcing a daily cycle of suffering for women and girls. UN Women estimates that some 83,200 households in the occupied West Bank are headed by women – representing one in eight households. This figure is likely an underestimate. More than 41,500 people have been displaced (OCHA, July 2026), including more than 20,000 women and girls, based on population breakdowns by gender from PCBS in the West Bank. Based on UN Women’s analysis of survey data, among women who are formally recognized as household heads: 82 per cent are responsible for managing household income 77 per cent are responsible for childcare 75 per cent make all decisions about household members’ safety 65 per cent handle aid registration alone Women household heads are also more likely to be displaced, with 40 per cent of women-headed households no longer living in their original home, compared to 30 per cent of men-headed households. Checkpoints mean Palestinian women struggle to reach work, collect aid, access healthcare, and move their families to safety without fear. There are 925 movement obstacles – including staffed checkpoints, road barriers and trenches – across the occupied West Bank – the highest number recorded in two decades. Forty per cent of all checkpoints are located in the H2 area of Hebron city. Nearly nine in ten women heading households interviewed stated that checkpoints make travel feel unsafe. More than half say movement restrictions are blocking their access to livelihoods. Every woman heading a household interviewed reported avoiding checkpoints altogether. Displaced women-headed households report being unable to meet basic needs, with insufficient access to cash, food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and shelter needed for survival, alongside heightened fears of violence and security concerns for their children. One in five women household heads report fear of gender-based violence – more than double the rate among women living in male-headed households. This sits within a wider picture of insecurity, in which more than three-quarters of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank report feeling unsafe in daily life. UN Women’s analysis found that women heading households – navigating checkpoints, collecting humanitarian assistance, and moving through public spaces – are disproportionately exposed to harassment, intimidation, and risks of gender-based violence. One in four women-headed households receives no humanitarian assistance at all, compared to nearly half of male-headed households. Over half of women-headed households with chronic illness report unmet cash needs; two thirds are coping by taking out loans; and half are skipping meals altogether. Among those who do receive humanitarian assistance, cash remains the single largest unmet need. More than 70 per cent of survey respondents said they had not been consulted over the past year on how, when, or where to deliver aid. Nearly two thirds of women household heads report chronic illness among household members – compared to 41 per cent of male-headed households. More than a quarter of women heading households report having a disability. These vulnerabilities directly reduce a household’s capacity to generate income whilst increasing the demand for care, medicines, transport, and health services. UN Women calls for immediate action to end the violence, movement restrictions, and home demolition in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem – and to protect women and girls, and all civilians, in line with international law. UN Women calls for dedicated support for women-headed households – support that is disability-inclusive, and combines livelihoods, social protection, health, shelter, and protection services. Rights group accuses Israel of dismantling 'Palestinian existence' in West Bank

Israeli rights group B'Tselem said Monday that Israeli actions in the occupied West Bank form part of a greater project designed to make it impossible for Palestinians to exist together as a people. In a report titled "The Elimination Project", the group alleged five connected Israeli tactics and policies in the West Bank: "violence, ethnic cleansing, movement restrictions, economic strangulation, social and political destruction". Macklemore dropped from Ed Sheeran’s US tour after ‘free Palestine’ speech

The American rapper will no longer support Sheeran’s US leg of Loop tour after comments at MetLife Stadium show Macklemore has been dropped from the remainder of the US leg of Ed Sheeran ’s Loop tour, after the American rapper drew headlines for saying “free Palestine” on stage at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. In a brief speech between songs on 4 September, the Grammy-winning artist told the audience he wanted the people of Gaza and “the occupied West Bank” to know “we have not forgotten about them”, prompting a petition from the Israeli American Council demanding his removal from the tour.
