Yemen: Situation Update #2: Escalation of hostilities and displacement across Yemen (As of 9 September 2026)

KEY HIGHLIGHTS Some 11,442 households have been newly displaced countrywide since hostilities escalated on 3 September: 10,310 households across 15 districts in the Ta’iz hub (8,628 in Ta’iz and 1,682 in southern Al Hodeidah), 1,037 in the Aden hub (Lahj 462, Aden 299, Abyan 180 and Ad Dale’ 96) and 95 in Al Bayda, Marib and Sana’a. figures are preliminary and may include some double counting. Fighting continues along the western Ta’iz frontlines (Maqbanah, Jabal Habashi and Mawza’) and in southern Al Hodeidah, while airstrikes and military activity have also been reported along the Marib–Al Jawf axis and in Al Bayda. Displacement remained highly fluid on 8–9 September, with new arrivals reported in Jabal Habashi, Al Ma’afir, Ash Shamayytayn, Al Mudhaffar, Al Misrakh, Al Makha and Al Khukhah. The latest movements indicate a particularly rapid increase in displacement towards Hays and Al Makha, which have emerged as key reception areas for families fleeing the expanding hostilities along the west coast. Continued fighting and shifting frontlines are likely to trigger further displacement and secondary movements. Several existing IDP sites are overwhelmed. At least 908 households are families who were already displaced and have fled IDP sites. West coast access deteriorated on 9 September. Movement was temporarily suspended between Al Makha, Al Khukhah and Hays, and between Aden and Al Makha. Movement within the affected towns was highly restricted, no movement permits were issued and partner staff worked from home. Displacement has also extended southwards into the Aden hub, with more than 1,000 households reported arriving in Lahj, Aden, Abyan and Ad Dale’, with Lahj receiving the largest share. Many newly displaced families are staying with host communities or in self-settled locations outside routine site monitoring, which may limit the completeness of available figures. Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) partners have verified 4,116 households and assisted 2,723 since 2 September; 2,127 verified households are awaiting assistance. Response coverage remains low. Food Security and Agriculture Cluster (FSAC) partners have reached 1,554 of 6,144 households identified for emergency food assistance, leaving 4,390 households without confirmed response coverage, after accounting for planned assistance.; Cash and Markets Working Group (CMWG) partners have reached 1,381 households with emergency multi-purpose cash assistance (MPCA); and Shelter partners have reached 147 households against a planning caseload of 11,000 households. No WASH deliveries have yet been verified. Civilian casualties: Between 1 and 9 September, OHCHR verified 14 civilian casualties across eight incidents in Ta’iz and Al Hodeidah, including two children killed, with women and children among those injured. Four additional incidents in Ta’iz, Lahj, Marib and Al Jawf remain under verification and are not included in the verified figures.
