NTSB Prelim: Staudacher Jon ZZ 102

The Airplane Was Likely A Unique Build With Only The Accident Airplane Currently Registered On August 12, 2026, about 1906 eastern daylight time, a Staudacher ZZ 102 experimental airplane, N134ZZ, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Vicksburg, Michigan. The airline transport pilot and one passenger were seriously injured. The flight operated under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight. Preliminary information provided by law enforcement indicated the airplane departed from Thrall Lake Airport (7MI3), Vicksburg, Michigan, and climbed to about 1,500 ft when it descended and impacted terrain. Both occupants were airlifted to hospitals, and the airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and both wings.

Aero Linx: Soaring Society of America, Inc. The Soaring Society of America, Inc. was formed in 1932 to foster and promote all phases of soaring, both nationally and internationally. Since then, the SSA membership has grown to almost 10,000. It is run by a 17 member Board of Directors, 10 of which are elected by the general membership by region to serve a three-year term, and seven who are elected by the Board of Directors each year to serve one-year terms. The policies and programs implemented by the SSA are decided by the Board of Directors, in meetings held bi-annually in the Summer and Winter. All Board meetings are open to the general membership.

NTSB Prelim: Cessna 208B

(Pilot) Extended The Wing Flaps In Preparation For Landing And Subsequently Heard A Loud “Pop” On August 9, 2026, at 1420 mountain daylight time, a Cessna 208B airplane, N247JP, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Salmon, Idaho. The pilot and eight passengers were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 135 ondemand air taxi flight. The pilot reported that, after an uneventful flight from the departure airport, he joined the downwind leg of the traffic pattern for runway 17. While turning onto the base leg, he extended the wing flaps in preparation for landing and subsequently heard a loud “pop.” Immediately thereafter, the airplane made an aggressive, uncommanded roll to the left and banked to about 45°.

Secondary Radar/Radar Beacon (ATCRBS) A radar system in which the object to be detected is fitted with cooperative equipment in the form of a radio receiver/transmitter (transponder). Radar pulses transmitted from the searching transmitter/receiver (interrogator) site are received in the cooperative equipment and used to trigger a distinctive transmission from the transponder. This reply transmission, rather than a reflected signal, is then received back at the transmitter/receiver site for processing and display at an air traffic control facility.

NTSB Prelim: Stearman A75

Passenger Reported That Oil Spray Was Coming In The Cockpit And He Could Smell Burning Oil On September 8, 2026, about 1100 central daylight time, a Boeing-Stearman A75L300 airplane, N680HW, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Bogue Chitto, Mississippi. The pilot sustained minor injuries and the passenger was uninjured. The airplane operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot reported that in cruise flight, the passenger reported that oil spray was coming in the cockpit and he could smell burning oil from the engine. The pilot saw that oil pressure had decreased and began to divert to the nearest airfield.
