The iPhone Air makes a stronger case in the hand than it does on a specification sheet. It is 46 grams lighter than the iPhone 18 Pro, has a slightly larger display, and feels unlike any other iPhone. With its polished titanium frame and frosted glass back, it looks more classy and premium than the iPhone 18 Pro in many respects. Four generations of changes bring improvements to the display, every camera on the device, battery life, charging, sustained performance, and connectivity. Battery life is likely to be the strongest improvement for most users, particularly if their current device no longer comfortably lasts through the day, while faster wired charging makes brief charging stops more useful. The newer battery is also designed to retain 80% of its original capacity for twice as many complete charge cycles under ideal conditions, and Charge Limit offers more control over long-term battery wear. USB-C is another significant quality-of-life improvement for iPhone 14 Pro owners. It allows the iPhone to share cables with recent Macs, iPads, and accessories, while the jump from USB 2 to USB 3 speeds makes large wired photo and video transfers far quicker. The Action button and Camera Control also provide two new physical controls that the iPhone 14 Pro lacks. The camera upgrade is especially compelling for anyone who regularly takes photos or records video. There are physical trade-offs to consider. Both newer models are taller and thicker, although the move from stainless steel to aluminum means the weight increases by only 5 grams on the Pro and 9 grams on the Pro Max despite the larger displays and batteries. The aluminum enclosure improves thermal management, but it is less premium-looking, and it may show dents and scratches more readily than the iPhone 14 Pro's stainless steel frame. If your iPhone 14 Pro still meets your needs and comfortably lasts through the day, upgrading is not urgent, but you may want to think about getting a new device soon. A battery replacement may be worth considering if reduced health is your main complaint and you would otherwise be happy to keep your device. The upgrade becomes much easier to recommend when battery limitations coincide with a desire for Apple Intelligence, USB-C, the newer cameras, and a larger display. A discounted iPhone 17 Pro is another option if your priorities are the aluminum design, higher-resolution telephoto camera, square front-camera sensor, Apple Intelligence, USB-C, and vapor chamber cooling. Those upgrades arrived before this year's model. Paying more for the iPhone 18 Pro makes the clearest sense when you also want the variable aperture, Pro controls, A20 Pro, smaller Dynamic Island, and further improvements to battery life and charging, but coming from an iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 17 Pro will still feel like a significant upgrade. Ahead of the new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips launching this Tuesday , the first reviews of the computer have been shared by selected tech websites and YouTube channels. According to one review published by Macworld 's Roman Loyola , the biggest upgrade isn't even the M5 Ultra, but rather significantly faster storage speeds. "Typically, we start our reviews by looking at overall performance with Geekbench, and then we work our way through more specific aspects," he said. "But the SSD performance is so overwhelmingly good, it's the story here." Loyola ran Blackmagic's Disk Speed Test benchmark tool on the new Mac Studio with an 18-core M5 Max chip, 128GB of RAM, and a 4TB SSD, and the computer achieved around 2.6× faster SSD read speeds and around 2.1× faster SSD write speeds compared to a previous-generation Mac Studio with the M4 Max chip. The results are shown in the image below. Indeed, Apple advertised up to 2× faster storage speeds for the new Mac Studio, and these benchmark results show an even bigger boost. As always, real-world performance may vary, but expect significantly faster SSD speeds overall. M5 Ultra benchmark results already surfaced last week if you are interested in that. Unsurprisingly, the M5 Ultra is Apple's fastest chip ever. Based on Geekbench 7 results so far, it has up to around 30% faster single-core CPU performance and up to around 35% faster multi-core performance compared to the M3 Ultra. But, it comes at a steep cost. In the U.S., the Mac Studio with a 36-core M5 Ultra starts at $6,799. Apple said the M5 Ultra has up to 1.25× faster single-threaded CPU performance and up to 1.3× faster multi-threaded CPU performance compared to the M3 Ultra, so the benchmark results roughly align with or even beat those advertised claims. All in all, the new Mac Studio is super fast, with The Verge 's Antonio G. Di Benedetto describing the M5 Ultra model's performance as "outrageous" and PCMag 's Brian Westover calling the computer "a serious powerhouse for top-tier local AI inference." The new Mac Studio and a new Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro chip options have been available to pre-order since August 25 and launch this Tuesday, September 22. iFixit today published an iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max teardown in both article and video formats, providing a closer look inside the new devices. Dubai: Deep in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, at the doorstep of the Empty Quarter in Liwa, there stands a gigantic wall of sand. This is no Game of Thrones or Mad Max set. It’s an ancient sand dune and a natural wonder, centuries in the making. Welcome to Tal Moreeb or the Moreeb Dune. Every year, the UAE’s most powerful four-wheel drives, quad bikes and dirt bikes attempt to scale the face of Tal Moreeb (which translates to ‘Scary Hill’ in Arabic), in an exhilarating competition that draws crowds from all around the UAE and beyond. Since 2001, the dune has also been the backdrop to the annual Liwa International Festival, which brings together motorsport, falconry, horse and camel races, live music, cultural performances and family entertainment. Why are off-roaders drawn to this breathtaking dune, and what else does the region offer for visitors? Read on and learn more. Tal Moreeb: A history of adventure At over 300m high, stretching over 1,600m, with a 50-degree slip face, Tal Moreeb is the largest sand dune in the UAE, and considered one of the largest dunes in the world. For perspective, its height roughly equals a 100-storey building, or three football fields stacked end-to-end. Legend has it, when a group of young Emirati men encountered this gigantic wall of swirling sand in 2001, they challenged each other to summit the dune on their bikes and in their sports utility vehicles (SUVs). What began as a dare, became an annual motorsport competition and social experience. Recognising the growing cultural and geographical significance of Liwa, in 2004, the Abu Dhabi government built a paved road to Tal Moreeb, drawing more off-roaders and visitors. But that’s not all that’s going on at this majestic site. At the base of the dune, every year since 2001, the Liwa desert has hosted a local competition and annual winter festival celebrating Emirati heritage, motorsports and desert adventure. Over the years, the festival has gained attention from around the region, and today, it has become a prominent feature on the UAE’s social calendar: the Liwa International Festival. In 2026, Tal Moreeb, Liwa Village at its base, and the Liwa International Festival attracted more than 700,000 visitors, marking the area’s significance as a hub for drag races, dune bashing, culture and tourism. Thrills and chills For decades, off-roading enthusiasts have been attempting to scale the staggering face of the Tal Moreeb and surrounding dunes. Wael Joumaa, a Lebanese entrepreneur, who has lived in Dubai for 14 years, first saw Tal Moreeb in 2014, and still remembers being amazed by the sheer size of it. He said: “Moreeb has this presence. You look up at it and realise just how small you are compared to the desert. At the same time, if you love off-roading, you can’t look at a dune like Moreeb without thinking, ‘Can I make it up there?’ There’s a mix of respect, excitement and curiosity. You know the desert deserves to be taken seriously, but that challenge is also part of what makes it so exciting.” Wael Joumaa, a Lebanese entrepreneur, who has lived in Dubai for 14 years, first saw Tal Moreeb in 2014, and still remembers being amazed by the sheer size of it. Picture credit: Supplied Since his first trip there, Joumaa, who is a self-confessed motorsport enthusiast, has attempted to scale Tal Moreeb with different vehicles over the years, including his Jeep Wrangler 392. He said: “It’s not only about having a powerful car or proving something. There’s the challenge of understanding your vehicle, reading the sand, choosing your line and knowing when to push and when not to. Reaching the top gives you a real sense of achievement.” The appreciation of heritage, history, and community surrounding the dunes also makes the experience special, in his eyes. Joumaa said: “People around the world know the UAE for its cities, architecture and how quickly the country has developed. But when you drive out to Liwa and see that landscape, you connect with something much deeper. The desert is a huge part of the history and identity of this country, and I think it’s important that people get the chance to experience that.” He added that there is a strong community around dune bashing at Tal Moreeb – people who share the same passion for cars, desert, and adventure – and it’s another reason why so many off-roaders congregate there every year. Mohamad El Lakis, a Lebanese general manager, who has lived in the UAE for 10 years, first visited Moreeb Dune in December 2024 – but one visit was not enough. He was back again in less than a fortnight. He said: “The first trip was mainly for camping and enjoying Liwa, but once I saw the dunes and the scale of the terrain, I knew immediately that I needed to return and experience it properly from behind the steering wheel.” El Lakis said he loves summiting dunes in Liwa. Picture credit: Supplied El Lakis has seen Liwa flourish into a landmark destination, first for off-roaders, and then for tourists from around the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). He said: “Among off-roaders, I joke that you cannot call yourself a senior off-roader until you have ticked Liwa off your list. Every major climb gives you an adrenaline rush. At the same time, Liwa demands respect. It tests your driving skills, your ability to read the terrain, your vehicle preparation and your decision-making. There is also a competitive side to it.” Desert, dunes, and festivals Over the years, however, the area has become about something more significant than motorsports. The Liwa International Festival is putting the spotlight on Emirati heritage, food and culture, and blending it with the sporting community’s love for adventure – all within the majestic landscape of desert dunes. El Lakis says it’s a special place for the off-roading community, with people coming from far and wide: “When you are there, you constantly see vehicles coming from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and across the GCC. People travel huge distances specifically to experience Liwa. That gives the festival a very special atmosphere. You arrive as separate groups, but after some time you feel like part of one large off-roading and desert community. Emiratis you have never met before may invite you to their camp or farm, people help each other when someone gets stuck or has a mechanical problem, and conversations continue around the camps until very late at night.” Even if you’re not a fan of high-octane thrills, the Liwa International Festival has plenty to offer, from a family zone with activities for children aged 1 to 12, to a Ferris wheel for those who want to enjoy spectacular desert views. There are also souks, daily cultural performances, petting zoos, ziplines, carnival rides and desert mazes. If you’re planning to visit on New Year’s Eve, you can even catch drone shows and fireworks. For El Lakis, visiting Liwa is an opportunity to immerse yourself in both the new and the ancient – and both capture the true spirit of the country. He explained: “Liwa shows visitors something very authentic about the UAE: the connection to the desert, the hospitality of its people, the passion for cars and competition, and a constant appetite for adventure.” This year, Liwa International Festival will take place from December 11, 2026, to January 3, 2027, in Al Dhafra, Abu Dhabi. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a battery capacity over 20 watt-hours, which means there are additional shipping requirements. If an iPhone 18 Pro Max needs to be shipped somewhere, its maximum battery capacity has to be limited through firmware. According to Apple , the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses an "innovative battery-firmware solution" that limits battery capacity to below 20Wh between when the iPhone is manufactured and its delivery to a customer. Activating the iPhone removes the limit to make the battery's full charging capacity available. iPhones that are not yet activated or still in the box will not need Prepare to Ship because they are already limited to under 20Wh. Customers who need to ship the iPhone 18 Pro Max for repair, trade-in, or other purposes have to use a new Prepare to Ship feature. Prepare to Ship discharges the battery to below 20Wh and sets a charge limit so the iPhone stays below the threshold during the shipping process. The Prepare to Ship option can be accessed by going to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Prepare to Ship. Apple warns that the iPhone can become "warmer than usual" during Prepare to Ship if the battery needs to be discharged. When finished, the iPhone shows a "Ready to Ship" status in Settings. If Prepare to Ship needs to be undone, there is an option in the same section of the Settings app to undo the shipping preparation. Depending on the reason the user selected for the Prepare to Ship feature, there could be a 14-day waiting period before it can be disabled. Apple emphasizes that the iPhone 18 Pro Max is safe for shipping and air travel, and the limit has been added to meet shipping requirements. Since no other iPhones have a single-cell battery over 20Wh, this procedure isn't needed for other models. The first GPU benchmark results for Apple's new M5 Ultra and M6 chips have surfaced, ahead of the new Mac Studio and Mac mini models launching on Tuesday. If you are interested in CPU results, we shared those earlier this week . So far, the M5 Ultra has achieved up to a 59% higher Metal score (366,744) on Geekbench 7 compared to the M3 Ultra's average score of 230,420, and the chip's OpenCL score is roughly in line with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4080. As for the M6 chip, it has so far achieved up to a 34% higher Metal score (93,217) compared to the M5 chip's average score of 69,563.
